For my birthday, I gifted myself the ultimate solo pampering retreat. It was a 6-day escape to the serene landscapes of Kerala, India famously known as God’s Own Country. Here’s a glimpse of my leisurely vacation, captured through my lens.
📍 Destinations: Poovar • Kovalam • Alleppey • Munnar • Kochi
🕰️ Duration: 6 Days
💡 Ideal For: Nature lovers, wellness seekers, cultural explorers & backwater cruisers
Stop 1: Poovar – where Backwaters meet the Sea
Best Time to Visit: October to March
How to Reach :
- By Air: Nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) – around 30 km from Poovar.
- By Road: Well-connected via taxis or rental cars from Thiruvananthapuram city (1 hour).
Tucked away at the southernmost tip of Kerala in the Thiruvananthapuram district, Poovar marks the beginning of my journey through “God’s Own Country.” A harmonious blend of serene backwaters, golden beaches, and lush mangrove forests, Poovar offers a tranquil escape that feels like a world apart.
Highlights: Into the Green – a Mangrove Forest Tour
The first chapter of this adventure began with a Mangrove Forest Safari along the Neyyar River which stood out as a mysterious, serene experience. Navigating the dense foliage by boat, I discovered a thriving aquatic ecosystem and one of Kerala’s most biodiverse regions. It’s fascinating to learn that these salt-tolerant mangroves have a crucial role in climate regulation. They store carbon and nurture rich biodiversity.

Highlights: From Forest to Paradise – Arrival at Poovar Island Resort
After an enchanting afternoon drifting through the emerald tunnels of Poovar’s mangrove forest, I checked into the luxurious Poovar Island Resort. The resort is accessible only by boat – a truly surreal experience.

Highlights: A Private Island Escape
My stay in the Superior Cottage room was everything I imagined and more. With its pastel-hued interiors, lush greenery, and a private balcony overlooking the Arabian Sea, this place felt like a tropical dream come true.

Highlights: Complimentary Arabian Sea Cruise
The natural beauty was simply magical. It ranged from golden sand beaches nestled between the Neyyar River and the Arabian Sea to surreal sunsets.

Highlights: A Magical Nightfall
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the resort transformed into something truly enchanting. Pathways were gently lit, casting golden reflections on the water, while the traditional architecture stood serenely against the night sky.

Highlights: Dinner at Tiffin’s – A Cultural Medley on a Plate
A lovely surprise on the buffet menu was the Vazhappu Cutlet—Kerala meets Bengal. A highlight of the meal was this inventive spin on Bengal’s Mochar Chop. Made with banana blossoms (vazhappu), potatoes, and spices, these cutlets were crispy outside, tender inside, and full of earthy goodness.

Seafood Seekh Kebab—soft, aromatic, and delicately spiced, these kebabs—crafted from minced seafish—were a first for me. Each bite was flavorful and refined.

Kerala-style Pani Puri – this local twist on the beloved street food was zingy and fun, featuring spicy water and crisp puris filled with spiced chickpeas and potatoes.

The star Chicken Varutharacha, deeply flavoured dish – literally meaning “roasted & ground” had a rich, dark gravy that was comforting and indulgent, the kind of meal that warms both body and soul.

Highlights: A Classic South Indian Breakfast at Tiffin’s
Waking up to the gentle rustle of palm leaves and the soft splash of backwaters is an experience in itself – but the real magic began at breakfast.

I started my morning with a traditional Kerala-style Egg Curry – a combination of steamed rice cakes layered with coconut and a creamy coconut egg curry—hearty and traditional.

Next came the Semiya Upma, or vermicelli upma – a healthy and comforting dish made from vermicelli, vegetables, and mild spices, perfect for a slow, relaxed morning.

No breakfast in Kerala is complete without the classic quartet: Idli, Dosa, Sambar, and Vada – served fresh and hot, it was the perfect farewell to a magical stop.

Poovar is not just a destination—it’s a feeling. A convergence of river, sea, forest, and sky, where luxury meets nature, and culture meets calm.

Whether sipping on tropical juice or savoring a freshly made Dosa, I immersed in the kind of mindful luxury only a cliff-top coastal breakfast can offer. The gentle sea breeze and panoramic ocean views of the Arabian Sea at the backdrop made every bite more soulful.

One of the most memorable breakfasts I experienced was a curated selection of South Indian classics, deeply rooted in temple traditions and regional heritage.
The Kanchipuram Idli (Kovil Idli) – a temple-style steamed rice cake spiced with curry leaves, ginger powder, and hing.

Next came the Idiyappam (Nool Puttu) – delicate rice noodle nests served with coconut chutney and a mild vegetable stew.

I also savoured Ven Pongal, the fluffy, fermented rice pancakes with a hint of sweetness, made with toddy and coconut.

The Kallappam (also called Veleyappam) brought a sweet note to the plate. Made with rice flour, grated coconut, and naturally fermented toddy (kallu). This spongy delight was soft, mildly sweet, and rich in texture.

The comforting Kerala-style Chicken Curry – Bold, and deeply spiced with curry leaves and coconut.

To accompany the mains, I had the Kerala-style Spicy Potato Stir Fry – a rustic, earthy side sautéed with onions, mustard, and dry spices.

Post High tea, I joined the boat cruise from their private jetty. As the boat glided through the calm waters, the golden hour painted the sky in hues of rose and amber. The wind in my hair, the soft splash of waves, and the sight of ships anchored offshore made it a poetic evening.

Back at the hotel, I stood on my balcony soaking in the twinkling lights of the harbour – a perfect moment of stillness and reflection.

Highlights: Bela Flowers & Coastal Evenings
I found myself completely smitten by the fragrant Bela flower garlands — delicate and dreamy, worn through the evening like a soft, scented crown. They added a romantic charm to the magical ambiance.

Highlights: Dinner at History & Terrace Grill – Culinary Tales from the Past
Dinner was a true cultural feast. The menu celebrates the diverse influences that shaped Kochi’s coastal cuisine – from Arab traders to European colonists.

Two recommended dishes stood out.
The first one is the super delicious, rich Malabar speciality – Prawn Pathiri came as the appetizer. A Malabar Mappila specialty, where prawns are delicately spiced with ground coconut and red chillies, wrapped in a deep-fried rice pancake. A fragrant, fiery start to the meal.

The second dish is a culinary delight from Colonial India – the Railway Mutton Curry. A colonial classic dating back to the 19th century. This Anglo-Indian gem – slow-cooked mutton in a mild coconut milk curry was once served in first-class train dining cars. It came paired with soft Jowar Roti and Pilaf, and each bite told a story of cross-cultural culinary evolution.

Paired my meal with a chilled glass of their in-house wine — the perfect nightcap.
Highlights: Morning Calm – Harbour View from my Room
I woke up to serene views from my private balcony – the soft morning light dancing on the waters.

Highlights: A Peaceful Morning & Breakfast at Armoury
The breakfast was a celebration of Kerala’s healthiest comfort foods. My plate featured the much-loved nutritious and wholesome Uttapam. Thick, savoury South Indian pancakes topped with onions, tomatoes, and green chillies with golden crisp at the edges and soft, fluffy at the center.

The other dish was the hot steaming aromatic and Keralite’s favourite Vegetable Stew (Kerala Ishtew) cooked in creamy coconut milk, served with spongy Kallappam (fermented rice pancakes made with toddy). Nourishing, light, and utterly satisfying.

Paired with fresh watermelon juice and a cup of strong filter coffee, it was the perfect start to the day.

Highlights: Exploring Fort Kochi – A Living Museum
Post breakfast, I set out to explore the soulful streets of Fort Kochi. Cobbled pathways led me through remnants of Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. I passed the iconic Chinese fishing nets, walked past ancient Dutch cemeteries, admired Portuguese-style architecture, and breathed in the salty sea air.

The colonial architecture and views of anchored ships made this a serene end to my journey.
