A Parsi Treat popup event was organized on 6-May-2018 at Mancherjis Parsi Food, 14 Kyd Street, Kolkata – the initiative was taken by the Founder and Owner of one of the renowned Food & Travel community ‘Kolkata Food Trotters’ – Mr Somek Choudhury.

The purpose of this event was not only focused on indulging into authentic Parsi delicacies but also meeting fellow food connoisseurs and noted bloggers who come from different areas of the professional world, possessing one common thing ‘Passion and Love for Food’.

The dishes were finely curated – fully enriched with authentic Parsi flavours and the first time my palette fully indulged into the essence of Parsi cuisines cooked by – Mrs Supriya Mancherji, the star of the evening. A Bong lady who tied the knot with a Parsi – Mr Mancherji. This the only restaurant in the City Of Joy that claims to serve ‘Parsi Food‘.

Just going back to give a background, on the Parsi food and its community – Parsi cuisine is a mix of vegetarian Gujarati cuisine and non-vegetarian Iranian cuisine and mostly meat oriented that reflects their distinctive Persian culture and tradition by blending universal ingredients and exotic flavours to create delicious dishes which is unique in nature. The community originating from Persia (now known as Iran) finally settled on the coast of Gujarat, India. Parsis love eggs, potatoes, dry fruits and nuts – that draws an Iranian influence.

MAIN COURSE

Salli Murgi – A delicious Parsi chicken curry preparation. The term ‘Sali’ comes from the deeply fried potato straws garnished with the spicy curry with a chicken leg piece. Served with white bread slices.

Mutton Dhansak – The most popular Indian dish among the Parsi Zoroastrian community made by cooking mutton with a mixture of lentils, vegetables and rich spices served with caramelized brown rice (staple food of Parsis) topped with fried onions. The traditional way of eating this dish is to mix rice with a generous amount of thick gravy and finely chopped with onion, tomato salad, chillies and lemon. The dish just tasted heaven.
