Sharing my gastronomical journeys during my dream vacation at the Greek Islands – Santorini, Mykonos and of course the capital city – Athens.

After travelling to many beautiful destinations in Europe, I chose Greece as my leisure vacation hub during late summer to hit its most popular scenic islands of Santorini, Mykonos –  not only distinctive with its deep blue oceanic landscape and architectures but draws the visitors from around the world for its delectable fresh seafood of the Cyclades.

SANTORINI —-

My food journey started with the most populous Cyclades islandsSantorini on the Aegean Sea demolished by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC leading to the Caldera view of its 2 main towns Fira and Oia with whitewashed painted houses overlooking the crystal clear blue waters of Aegean Sea.

My day used to begin by enjoying rich high protein fresh buffet breakfast with full of  local flavors served every morning that used to keep me all day running for sightseeing from the beautiful village of Santorini, GreeceOrizontes Hotel & Villas– a village resort located in Pyrgos village where I used to enjoy the panoramic breathtaking Caldera view – hallmark of the island on one side and the lush blue clear resort pool on the other end.

In short, this was simply a little paradise.

My first day of sightseeing kicked off with a visit to the village of Akrotiri followed by an immediate lunch break at Santorini ‘s most beautiful black sand beach – Perissa, on the southeastern side of Santorini located at the foot of enormous rock called Mesa Vouno.

Lunch at the most beautiful Perissa Beach, Santorini Greece – a perfect place to explore authentic Greek cuisines.

One of them in my wish list was to give try for MoussakaGreek traditional food with eggplant potato-based layered with ground meat topped with milk based sauce – egg and flour, which tasted very delicious enriched with full of local flavours along with refreshing cool ‘lemon beer’. The name of the dish originated from Turkish word ‘musakka‘.

My day ended at the most beautiful and picturesque village of Santorini – Oia located on the top of the cliff by enjoying the fantastic sunset view sipping over Greek ice Cold Coffee – Freddo Cappuccino – an espresso topped with frothy milk and served cold over ice.

To explore further, I  came across ‘gyro‘ or ‘gyros‘ – an authentic Greek dish made of meat cooked traditionally pork, chicken, or lamb kebabs (meat marinated with Greek-style spices) wrapped in a warm flatbread such as pita bread with tomatoes, onions and loads of french fries with tzatziki sauce (a Greek side dish of yogurt with cucumber, garlic, and often mint) and served.

My stay at Santorini would have remained incomplete without sipping the world-class fine wine which leads to a session of RED and WHITE wine tasting from local vineyards at Pyrgos village while enjoying the breathtaking view of Caldera at late afternoon.

Finally ended my journey at Santorini by enjoying fresh wood-fired cheese bacon peppers pizza over dinner at my room – Orizontes Hotel & Villas while adoring the breathtaking sunset view of the Caldera.

——– MYKONOS ——-

To continue my passion for gastronomy further, the next destination was Mykonos – a great party island with its beautiful beaches and one of them is Elia Beach.

Enjoyed my lunch – Spaghetti tossed in the white sauce served with best quality bacon and shredded parmesan served on the side was just phenomenal with the fresh lemonade at the fabulous beachfront restaurant – Elia Mediterranean Restaurant and Suites Mykonos, Elia Beach Mykonos, Greece

My stay at Aphrodite Beach Hotel overlooking the beach Kalafatis, Mykonos, Greece

was really an additional gain to pamper my palette into the best freshwater seafood served in their restaurant.
Fully relished my dinner with the lovely view on the terrace by the sea – with deep fried sea fresh battered squid served with lime and tartar sauce at their sea beach a la carte restaurant – ThalassaAphrodite Beach Hotel.

——–  ATHENS ——–

Athens – Capital City and Heart of Greece, was the final destination of my dream vacation.

A visit to the hilltop ancient buildings – Acropolis was followed by a tour and wine tasting as well at the Cape Sounion to enjoy the glimpse of sunset view of Temple of Poseidon overlooking the Aegean Coast.

Last but not the least my little shopping – goodies take away from the Greek island villages to nurture my culinary skills in India…

Yes, it’s all about local good quality Greek Olives Olive Oil, different varieties of Herbed Olives, Olive Paste,  which the Greeks have been cultivating for centuries.
